AppId is over the quota
Traditionally on April Fools' Day, we see a lot of fake news about obviously ridiculous movie announcements. Today, for instance, there's Funny or Die's Veronica Mars movie parody campaigns involving big-screen versions of Wings, Sliders, Darkwing Duck and Family Matters, and a promotion for the upcoming Seth Rogen/James Franco movie This Is the End came in the form of a Pineapple Express 2 trailer.
In the past, we've seen nice pranks involving a Criterion Collection release of Kindergarten Cop, Fox Searchlight rereleasing Garden State and Little Miss Sunshine in 3D, Tim Burton remaking Little Shop of Horrors, a Matrix movie starring Robert Pattinson, a C.S. Lewis biopic starring Kirk Cameron, Johnny Depp playing Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street remake and Johnny Depp playing the Riddler in the follow-up to The Dark Knight.
No year is complete, though, without some fake Star Wars-related news, which should seem off-limits or simply no longer funny now that we're actually getting more Star Wars movies. Film School Rejects' time-traveling gag from 2010 about the 1980 promise of seven more sequels, for instance, doesn't look like satire anymore. And yet I've seen stuff today about Disney putting Star Wars in the vault and Jar Jar Binks being a part of Star Wars VII. Meanwhile, news about a Star Wars comic book based on George Lucas's original draft of Star Wars is out today and apparently not an April Fools' Day prank.
Movie news in general is no longer that surprising after Disney's purchase of Lucasfilm and all that has come with it, rumors and truth. Same goes for comic book movie news, most of which we can't trust on any other day of the year. And is Screen Rant's joke last year about Taylor Lautner playing Leonardo in the Ninja Turtles reboot that much different than the reality of Megan Fox being cast as April O'Neil?
Other true stories from the past year that I thought were early April Fools' jokes include the Beverly Hills Cop Jr. TV series, the fact that Eddie Murphy is somewhat involved in that show as special guest star, Morgan Spurlock directing the One Direction 3D movie, Ashton Kutcher playing Steve Jobs in a biopic, Flight earning an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay, the whole Hobbit 48-frames-per-second debacle -- not to even mention the issue with the announcement of a third movie -- and probably some I've erased from my mind.
